Altered Esthetics was founded in 2004 by Jamie Schumacher to assist low-income and unrepresented artists in the Minneapolis community. Over time, Ae has evolved to meet the needs in the growing Minneapolis/St. Paul arts scene. In 2006, we shifted our focus from representation to arts education and community building.
In 2014, we began a partnership with The Southern Theater during Ae Without Walls, a time when we closed our gallery doors at the Q.arma Building in Northeast Minneapolis to explore pop-up exhibitions. Our partnership has expanded over the last couple of years, and as of January 2016, The Southern is now Ae's home!
Ae is operated by a volunteer board. Each member directly supports the mission and vision of the organization, not only through their fiscal support, but through voluntary management. In 2006, Ae gained 501-c3 status. With a strong internship program, professional workshops for artists, and unique educational programs, Ae has been a pillar in the Minneapolis community.
